PREVORA for Patients

PREVORA 100mg/ml Dental Solution is a 10% chlorhexidine formulation combined with sealant technology.

PREVORA is licensed for the prevention of tooth decay in high-risk adults. Experience with PREVORA spans clinical studies and real-world use over more than 20 years.1-6

PREVORA provides you with a new management option for your high-risk patients, including those who are difficult to treat. Used as an adjunct to standard practices, PREVORA reduces the bacteria that cause tooth decay and gum disease. Improvement can be seen within days and protection is long-lasting.

How PREVORA works

PREVORA forms a long-acting antibacterial tooth coating that provides effective and long-lasting protection.

The effects of PREVORA's active ingredient are well-established:

  • Chlorhexidine’s positive charge means it binds strongly to negatively charged oral surfaces, forming a slow-release reservoir within the mouth.
  • Chlorhexidine reduces the harmful bacteria that cause oral dysbiosis, tooth decay and gum disease, allowing healthy commensal bacteria to recolonise.
  • By modulating the oral biofilm, chlorhexidine reduces the build-up of plaque that can lead to the development of caries and gum disease.

PREVORA reduces oral dysbiosis, and helps restore oral health

How PREVORA is applied

01

PREVORA Stage 1 chlorhexidine coating is applied to all tooth surfaces and dried

02

PREVORA Stage 2 sealant coating is applied to all tooth surfaces and dried

PREVORA can be applied by a dental hygienist, therapist or nurse* in about 10 minutes

*Dental nurses must work under the direction of a GDC registrant.

Who is PREVORA for?

All adults over 45 years old:

  • With poor compliance with oral hygiene practices – including those with mobility or dexterity issues.
  • Wishing to avoid poor oral health/dental cavities in later years of life.

All other adults with one or more of the following:

  • A history of caries
  • Non-responsive bleeding sites
  • Oral dryness – all causes, including:
    • Antihypertensive use
    • Antidepressant use
    • Diabetes
    • Sleep apnoea
    • Radiotherapy
  • Peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis
  • Planned aesthetic dentistry

PREVORA's key features

PREVORA, with its unique formulation and clinical profile, offers several key features for managing oral dysbiosis:

Mechanism of action:

PREVORA utilises a clear, protective chlorhexidine coating as its primary active ingredient. Chlorhexidine is a well-established antiseptic agent known for its antibacterial properties, making it highly effective in reducing the bacteria that cause poor oral health.7,8

Extended protection:

PREVORA contains a high concentration of chlorhexidine (10%) and offers long-lasting protection. Chlorhexidine binds strongly bind to the dentition, resulting in a sustained-release mechanism and a longer duration of antibacterial action.9 Furthermore, a higher concentration of chlorhexidine is associated with a longer treatment effect.10

High efficacy in high-risk adults:

PREVORA has been shown to be effective in preventing tooth decay in high-risk adults.1,2 High-risk individuals include those with a history of multiple cavities, gum disease, limited saliva because of multiple medication use, or poor oral hygiene practices.

Professional use designation:

PREVORA has obtained MHRA approval for the treatment of caries with a professional use designation, eliminating the need for a prescription.11 This designation allows dental hygienists and dental therapists to independently administer PREVORA, enhancing its accessibility and ease of use. Dental nurses can also apply PREVORA, under the direction of a GDC registrant.

Simplicity of administration:

PREVORA is simply painted onto the patient’s teeth. Its application requires minimal training, no special equipment, and it can be delivered without aerosols.

Potential for gum disease management:

As well as caries prevention, PREVORA has demonstrated notable potential in managing gum disease.3-6 An ability to address both caries and gum disease simultaneously would provide significant additive clinical benefit, and further enhance patient acceptability and adherence.
